Developmental Needs Meeting Strategy

A large part of my practice is devoted to helping individuals overcome unwanted behaviors, emotions, and beliefs associated with hurts and wounds from childhood or early adulthood. The Developmental Needs Meeting Strategy (DNMS) is one of the best methods I have found for helping people identify the origin of their problems and move on from the past. This is a comprehensive, strengths-based, effective, and gentle therapy appropriate for most teens and adults who desire to get “unstuck” from whatever is holding them back from the happiness they desire.

DNMS was developed by Shirley Jean Schmidt, MA. LPC, from San Antonio, Texas. This unique strategy evolved out of her trauma recovery therapy practice using Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Having completed both her Part I and Part II intensive workshops, I am listed on the DNMS website as one of only 4 DNMS therapists in the state of Florida, and the only one in the Tampa Bay area.

Many problems and issues can be helped through DNMS therapy including depression, anxiety, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, addictions, anger, relationship problems, self-harming behaviors, borderline personality disorder, eating disorders, and other unwanted emotions and behaviors. DNMS draws from many well-researched theories including developmental psychology, attachment theory, ego state therapy, inner child therapy, EMDR therapy, and recent developments in neuroscience.
